Gateway Clubs

Gateway clubs help people with a learning disability take part in leisure, social and creative activities in the community, and provide opportunities for personal development. Gateway clubs give people with a learning disability the chance to speak up for themselves and have a say in the running of the organisation Gateway campaigns with people with a learning disability for their right to lead a full and active life in the community. Gateway provides people with support and information. Gateway organises local, national and international sporting events, and works with other groups locally and nationally to break down the barriers to social inclusion. All Gateway Clubs and projects are affiliated to Mencap and follow the “What Gateway believes“.

Gateway Club in West Berkshire meets weekly at the Mencap Centre and is a great opportunity for adults with a learning disability to take part in their own social club. It provides an opportunity for adults with a learning disability the chance to socially interact with friends in a warm friendly environment. The entertainment is chosen by the Gateway leader and the users committee. Gateway Club holds discos and barbecues, live bands come in to entertain and there are often games nights and craft nights.

The Gateway club leader is supported by volunteers who encourage members to involve themselves in activities. They also ensure that refreshments are provided.

There are also regular monthly outings organised by the Gateway Club leader and these are to a wide range of destinations including theme parks, museums, theatre trips and canal boat trips.

Our Newbury Gateway Club has been awarded Beacon status from Royal Mencap, as an example of good practice for other Gateway Clubs to follow.
