Gateway clubs help people with a learning disability take part in leisure, social and creative activities in the community, and provide opportunities for personal development. Gateway clubs give people with a learning disability the chance to speak up for themselves and have a say in the running of the organisation Gateway campaigns with people with a learning disability for their right to lead a full and active life in the community. Gateway provides people with support and information. Gateway organises local, national and international sporting events, and works with other groups locally and nationally to break down the barriers to social inclusion. All Gateway Clubs and projects are affiliated to Mencap and follow the “What Gateway believes“.
West Berkshire Mencap offer two Gateway clubs. Newbury Gateway meets weekly at the Mencap Centre and is a great opportunity for adults with a learning disability to take part in their own social club. It provides an opportunity for adults with a learning disability the chance to socially interact with friends in a warm friendly environment. The entertainment is chosen by the Gateway leaders with the input from the people that attend the club, activities include discos, barbecues, live bands, games nights, bingo, quiz nights, craft nights and much more. We also offer Beenham Gateway which is based at Beenham Victory Hall. This is a smaller group which runs every other Tuesday, activities are similar to Newbury Gateway with added pub nights.
