Well done to our Friendship Skills Group

Did you know we run a weekly group at West Berkshire Mencap for adults with learning disabilities, which is for our members who want to develop themselves and play a more active part in their local community?

This service is called The Friendship Skills group. The Friendship Skills group has been running for a number of years, and the group always has something exciting going on, whether it be taking part in local events, raising awareness of learning disabilities, going out on their big summer trip or learning from guest speakers on topics such as local history or sign language.

The Friendship Skills group with their certificates

Our group has been particularly busy for the last couple of weeks. The whole group was nominated for West Berkshire’s Learner Achievement Awards 2015! The group members work extremely hard on developing their skills and knowledge, and being nominated for this award shows recognition locally of their determination and hard work. We are very proud of them all.

If you were at Newbury Carnival on 5th July you would have also seen the group there. This is the second year that the group have demonstrated great teamwork skills by creating a float for the Carnival. This year’s float was titled ‘The Mencap Heroes’ and included their very own superhero – ‘Mencap Man!’ The members, the group’s volunteers and some of our enthusiastic staff members all took part on the day and raised much need funds for the service. The group would like to thank all the kind supporters who donated funds to them on the day and waved and cheered them on!

A huge round of applause to The Friendship Skills group for their very successful few weeks!
